The IJssel Biennial in the summer of 2020

  • 18 June - 19 Sep 2021
  • 08:00- 22:00

This international art trail along the most beautiful river in the Netherlands will get a sequel in the summer of 2020.
The IJssel Biennial is the longest art trail in the Netherlands, where the visitor will encounter 30 exciting and monumental art works, spread over more than 100 kilometres along the river IJssel in the provinces of Overijssel and Gelderland.

In addition, there will be lots of activities to enjoy along the route all summer long. These will include guided tours, talks by the artists, music and theatre in the floodplains, near locks, on estates and in the characteristic Hanseatic cities.

The theme of the IJssel Biennial will be the impact of climate change on our landscape. Under the title of ‘Tides, time and transience’ professional artists from the Netherlands and abroad will make works of art especially for the IJssel Biennial. The works will focus on particular locations and stories about the inspiring river landscape of the special IJssel Valley.

The first IJssel Biennial in 2017 attracted 65,000 visitors. The IJssel Biennial has international standing and will also focus attention on exhibitions in renowned museums in the region. The best way to enjoy the IJssel Biennial is by bicycle. The route has been divided up into a number of sections. The event is a wonderful excuse to visit this beautiful area. All details about the art works, the activities and the cycle routes are for sale on the website or at points of sale along the route.

The IJssel Biennial will take place from 19 June to 20 September 2020 inclusive. www.ijsselbiennale.nl

More information about the title:
TIME stands for long lines in history and the different speeds at which the landscape develops, TIDES for the repeating waves within time and TRANSIENCE for the changes which are forever followed by other changes, causing layers to be added to or removed from the landscape.
