The historic city center in combination with the many lights make it a true spectacle.

Looking for a nice destination for during the Christmas period? Then definitely do not skip the Hanseatic city of Zwolle. You'll find historic sights here, such as parts of the old city wall, the Sassenpoort, the Peperbustoren and the Broerenkerk: enough for a full day out. In addition, Zwolle has numerous culinary options in every price range. Also for lovers of a day of shopping Zwolle is pre-eminently suitable. During the Christmas period, the entire city center is beautifully lit: from the nice streets to the cozy squares. The entrepreneurs contribute their share. It is therefore worthwhile to plan an evening walk through the center of Zwolle. You will be amazed by the many illuminated buildings and statues.

Admire the Christmas trees of Zwolle

Like every year, a Christmas tree flaunts itself on the Grote Markt, next to the Glazen Engel and the Grote of Sint-Michaƫlskerk. The illuminated tree is no less than eighteen meters high and certainly contributes to the cosiness of downtown Zwolle.

In addition, you can make a wish at two different initiatives in Zwolle. Toyshop Speeleiland gives you the opportunity to leave a wish in a real wish tree. During the holiday season the tree will be located at a central spot in The Island. Hang your wishing ball in the tree and who knows, maybe your wish will come true! The winner will be announced in the first week of January. There is also a wishing tree at the Luttekestraat 11 in the heart of Zwolle. For whom do you hope a wish will come true? Drop by on 17, 18 or 19 December between 1 and 5 pm.

Via the Thorbeckegracht to De Spiegel

When you walk through the streets of Zwolle, you can't ignore the beautiful lighting. A nice route is to walk via the Thorbeckegracht to Theater De Spiegel. You then admire a part of the old city wall and several illuminated boats. Via the Pelserbrugje you walk to the theater in no time. You may think why specifically to the theater? Well, The Mirror is festively illuminated. The purpose of this is to serve as a beacon for the city and thus to radiate courage and zest for life. So don't forget De Spiegel during your walk!

The Light Sculpture Route in Zwolle

A popular coronaproof activity in December and January is walking the Lichtbeeldenroute in Zwolle. At various places among the annual Christmas lights you will find atmospheric light sculptures. The best way to discover these beautiful objects is with an audio tour. Zwolle Unlimited offers several audio tours that you can experience this winter. For example, for children there are the following routes to experience: 'The pine tree that wanted to be big' and 'Nemia - The girl without hands'. There are also fun audio tours of Zwolle for those over 12 and adults: 'The White Widows Ghost Tour', 'The Bleeding Swan Light Sculpture Route' and the 'Midwinter Ghost Tour'.

Special walking tour on Christmas Eve

Looking for an impressive walk for Christmas Eve? Then consider walking the route of lights along the Zwolle war graves at Kranenburg and Bergklooster. During this special walk, hundreds of candles have been placed to honor the men who fought for our freedom over 76 years ago. The civilian victims who fell in Zwolle are also commemorated.
